Try to be compatible with the situation

The idea here is for stoics to take expectations to be realistic. Once you develop that mindset – effectively that nothing new is coming from of the woods – you learn to adapt to those things happening in your world to which you have no control. Those things do not upset you even when they are generally unpleasant; and stoics are all about natural happiness.

What stoic philosophers strive to put across is the fact that nature has a lot to do with what happens to a human being; beginning with a person’s existence in the first place. Therefore, prudence lies in accepting what nature brings into your life. There was this analogy that ancient stoics used to give and it brought out the importance of compatibility very well. If someone tied a dog to the back of a cart and began to pull the cart along, what influence would the dog have on the person’s actions; say, how far he dragged the dog along or the direction the person took the cart?
